GRAND COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — The Grand County Sheriff’s Office said no one was found in an avalanche on Berthoud Pass Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies, search and rescue, emergency medical services, the Winter Park Ski Patrol dog team and Flight for Life worked to locate people who were possibly buried in the avalanche. GCSO said tracks into the area where backcountry skiers and snowboarders frequent were found but tracks out of the area were discovered in the search.

The avalanche was reported in the Current Creek area near the “postage stamp” feature around 11 a.m., just a couple of miles away from the Berthoud Pass Summit.

Upon initial search, human tracks were spotted going into the slide area.

A couple of hours later, matching tracks were spotted, coming out.

“This can still be dangerous,” says Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin.

Close to 30 people participated in the search efforts. A search dog team from nearby Winter Park Resort was also used.

“Today was a good day,” Schroetlin said, “because we don’t have any victims. Unfortunately, in the past, it’s been different, and we never know what lies ahead tomorrow.”
